Llano Grande is at one of the highest reaches of the Sierra Norte – 3,100 m (10,170 ft.). The hike – a loop of about 4 hours – leads through huge agaves, stands of pinkish madrona and moss-covered firs as well as views out onto the valleys, ridges and pueblos in the region. There are flowers blooming here 365 days a year. The trail passes the remains of the house of one of this area’s earliest Zapotec settlers and as well as his burial site.
Dining in Llano Grande after the hike is a special treat; Kata, the cook, is one of the best in the Pueblos Mancomunados.
