La Cumbre / Santa Catarina Ixtepeji is at one of the highest reaches of the Sierra Norte – 3,200 m (10,499 ft.). The hike – a loop of about 4 hours – leads through huge agaves, stands of pinkish madrona and moss-covered firs as well as views out onto the valleys, ridges and pueblos in the region. There are flowers blooming here 365 days a year.
Lunch in Las Animas, the capital of the chocolate qwirl maker, after the hike is a special treat.
