This trip to the coast is difficult but rewarding. Leaving Oaxaca we drive out the valley of Ocotlan de Morelos. We visit one of the black pottery studios in San Bartolo Coyotepec where firing is still done in underground pits. Then off to an alebrije workshop in San Martin Tilcajete where the creation of hand- hewn and hand-painted animals has been elevated to a high art.
After lunch we drive into the mountains – the Sierra Sur – and spend the night at a permaculture center in San Jose del Pacifico where you will have the best vegeterian food you ever tried before.
Leaving San Jose after breakfast we take the steep winding road down into the Pluma Hidalgo, Oaxaca’s most famous coffee growing region. Here we visit Don Filadelfo. He has reverently set out to preserve and protect the organic coffee culture of Oaxaca. He is also the founder of a 300 small coffee farmers cooperative which tries to give a sustainable income to their families. We spend the night at Don Gabriel’s coffee plantation.
Continuing on to the coast.
From there – the beach. We are happy to drop you off at one of the bays of Huatulco where luxury hotels abound; the funky beach town of Zipolite; San Agustinillo – one of our preferred spots or; Mazunte – home of the turtle museum and the natural cosmetics store. Better yet you can join us on a coastal tour or a visit to the Finca El Mamey!
