Four Days in the Clouds Hiking Tour
Deep into the Sierra Norte
Some journeys aren't measured by distance but by how deeply they let you settle into a place. This is our classic, most immersive multi-day trekking tour in the Pueblos Mancomunados — four days walking from village to village, sleeping each night in community cabins, and gradually crossing into a different rhythm of life shaped by forests, rivers, valleys, and generations of Zapotec mountain culture.
Day 1: San Isidro Llano Grande to San Antonio Cuajimoloyas
The journey begins at high elevation, crossing meadows and pine forest before descending into La Cueva de la Iglesia, a hidden, steep-walled canyon that ranks among Yves' favorite places in the entire Sierra Norte de Oaxaca. Encounters with wild horses roaming freely near a mountain reservoir are a frequent highlight of this first day, before the trail delivers us into San Antonio Cuajimoloyas for the first overnight stay in community cabins.
Day 2: San Antonio Cuajimoloyas to Santa Martha Latuvi
The second day traces a gradual ecological transition as high-altitude cloud forest slowly gives way to oak woodland. Spectacular viewpoints open along the route, and with some luck, we may spot wild orchids blooming among the trees — along with other resident wildlife, including the region's native lizard species that shelter among the rocky outcrops. After a late lunch in the village, the group settles into cabins in Santa Martha Latuvi for a peaceful second night.
Day 3: Santa Martha Latuvi to Santa Catarina Lachatao
Day three follows the historic Camino Real, a pre-Hispanic trading route that once linked the Gulf Coast to the Oaxaca Valley across these very mountains. The trail winds through enchanting oak forest draped in Spanish moss and air plants, passing rivers, cornfields, and old farmhouses before arriving in Santa Catarina Lachatao — home to what many describe as the trip's most beautiful mountain cabins, and a fitting setting for the third night immersed in Zapotec village life.
Day 4: Toward the Old Gold Hacienda
The final day descends through lower mountain forest rich in bromeliads, arriving at the atmospheric ruins of a colonial-era gold hacienda — a walk that moves through both dense subtropical nature and the layered mining history of the region. After a final lunch in the village, the journey concludes with the return drive to Oaxaca City.
Twenty Years of Relationships in the Mountains
Throughout the four days, we stay as guests within Zapotec communities, accompanied by local guides who share ecological knowledge, oral history, and personal stories tied to the land. Luggage travels ahead by vehicle between villages, meaning we carry only a light daypack for each day's walk — a detail that makes this demanding, multi-day itinerary considerably more comfortable than it might first appear. Meals are shared in family homes rather than restaurants, and after more than two decades of returning to these same villages, many of the encounters along the way feel less like transactional tourism and more like reunions with old friends. This depth of relationship is central to what makes our approach to community-based ecotourism in Oaxaca genuinely distinctive.
Why Choose the Four-Day Journey
If you have already sampled shorter Sierra Norte itineraries — or simply want the fullest possible immersion — this 4-day Pueblos Mancomunados trek offers unmatched depth: four distinct ecosystems, three nights in three different mountain communities, a historic pre-Hispanic trade route, wild horse encounters, and the ruins of a colonial gold hacienda, all woven into one continuous journey. It's an outstanding choice for serious hikers, slow-travel enthusiasts, and anyone drawn to authentic cultural immersion in rural Mexico.
