Santiago Apoala
The Mythical Valley of the Mixteca
Ruta: Tehuacan-Cuicatlan
Hidden within the spectacular Sierra Mixteca, Santiago Apoala is one of Oaxaca’s most beautiful and culturally significant destinations. Surrounded by towering canyon walls, waterfalls, and crystal-clear rivers, this sacred valley is considered the birthplace of the Mixtec people.
We have been visiting Apoala since the early days of Tierra Ventura in 1999, developing close relationships with the community and a deep appreciation for its unique history and traditions.
Our journey follows the river through a dramatic canyon to the village, once an important center of Mixtec civilization. Along the way, we discover lush landscapes, ancestral stories, and breathtaking views. The following day, we hike to Apoala’s beautiful waterfalls and natural pools, with time to swim and enjoy the tranquility of this remarkable place.
More than a hiking adventure, Apoala offers a unique opportunity to connect with the cultural roots of Oaxaca and experience one of the most enchanting valleys of the Mixteca.
