Camino Real Latuvi Lachatao
Walking the Ancient Trading Route
Ruta: De las Nubes
Follow one of the old mountain paths that once connected the villages of the Sierra Norte with Oaxaca’s valleys and formed part of the great network of pre-Hispanic trade routes across Mesoamerica, known as Camino Real.
Starting in Santa Martha Latuvi, this gentle hike follows a small river through agricultural landscapes marked by old stone walls and traditional farming practices that are still alive today. Along the way, we experience one of the most fascinating aspects of the Sierra Norte, the gradual transformation of ecosystems.
As the valley narrows, the forest changes unexpectedly. Spanish moss appears hanging from the branches, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere, while new plants emerge among the rocks, including epiphytes and native cacti.
With some luck, we may even spot a trogon — one of Mexico’s most beautiful birds, known to inhabit this valley.
We end up in the village of Santa Catarina Lachatao, one of the original villages of Pueblos Mancomunados, here we enjoy lunch before going back to Oaxaca.
A quiet and magical hike that follows ancient footsteps through changing landscapes and hidden mountain ecosystems.
