Ancient Forests & Ancient Mountain trading Paths

This two-day journey combines one of Oaxaca’s most beautiful cloud forest hikes with an unforgettable walk along an ancient trading route.
Day 1 – La Cumbre & Overnight in Santa Martha Latuvi
We begin in the high mountain landscapes above Santa Catarina Ixtepeji and explore one of the most beautiful forest hikes of the Sierra Norte. Walking through ancient cloud forest, giant agaves, moss-covered trees, and spectacular viewpoints, we experience the extraordinary biodiversity of these mountains.
After lunch in the tiny Zapotec village of Las Ánimas, we continue to Latuvi, where we spend the night in the community cabins surrounded by mountain silence.
Day 2 – Following the Ancient Trading Route
The next morning, we start our hike from Latuvi toward Santa Catarina Lachatao, following one of the old paths that once connected the villages of the Sierra Norte with Oaxaca’s valleys and broader trade networks across Mesoamerica.
Following the river and walking through changing ecosystems, we pass traditional agricultural landscapes and enter forests draped with Spanish moss before arriving in Lachatao, where we have a late lunch before driving back to Oaxaca city.
Two days of ancient forests, mountain hospitality, and walking in the footsteps of generations.
